Event Description

Business in the Community launches Responsible Business Week 2013

The UK’s first ever Responsible Business Week will take place from 16-19 April 2013.

Organised by charity Business in the Community, the week aims to provide a platform for companies to demonstrate their commitment to responsible business - while also raising awareness of business as a powerful force for good in society.

Through a varied programme of networking events, inspiring speakers, sparkling debate, and practical support, complimented by interactive online conversation, Responsible Business Week 2013 will profile those companies that share, live and breathe the core values that are important to their customers and integrate responsible behaviour into all that they do. In doing so the charity hopes to inspire businesses to do more to tackle some of the most pressing social and environmental issues, locally and globally.

Events have been designed to inspire and inform, and will be delivered by the very best thinkers and innovators from across the UK’s growing responsible business movement who will explain how they are transforming their businesses, and in the process transforming communities.

With events being confirmed each week, some of the planned initiatives include:

  • Open Doors - Businesses will throw open their doors for a unique programme of events giving participants the opportunity to go behind the scenes and get the inside view from within those businesses leading the way in responsible business.
  • The Sustainability Summit - led by BITC’s renowned Sustainability Director Dr Alan Knight, the event will cut through the complexity of this agenda to give business a clear response to the sustainability challenge.
  • Workplace Symposium – Helping Human Resources and Corporate Responsibility managers identify the culture shift needed to get organisations fit for the future.
  • Solutions Day – a series of practical workshops and training sessions for business professionals at different stages on the responsible business journey.
  • Opportunity Now Dinner – Awards ceremony recognising the very best examples of companies taking a lead in building diverse a employee base.

Commenting on the initiative, Stephen Howard, Chief Executive, Business in the Community said: “Responsible Business Week is all about turning CSR rhetoric into business reality. We want to inspire real behaviour change by providing more practical case studies of how to truly transform businesses for the long term, and tangible examples of how to incorporate values into day-to-day business; for the benefit of communities, employees and the environment.

He continues: “This week will illuminate how responsible business is becoming an integrated part of businesses operations, driving innovation, consumer engagement and the long term sustainability of some of the UK’s biggest business - from familiar high street names to global operators. We encourage all our members, and the wider business community to get involved.”

Business in the Community is encouraging companies from across its 850 strong membership base and beyond to get involved, by signing up to participate in the programme of events, which have been designed to ensure there is something relevant for all levels across a business, from chief executives to CR practitioners. Responsible Business Week is for anyone involved in building a successful business that benefits from responsible business practices. There are individual events with particular relevance to business professionals working in marketing, HR, sustainability, corporate responsibility, supply chain, procurement and finance. Events will be taking place across the country with further opportunities for business to participate in online discussions and seminars.

In addition, companies are being asked to plan and run their own activity to tie into the week, which could range from internal staff events or launching responsible business campaigns to social media activity.

Business in the Community will also be using its website as a portal to showcase the practical way that businesses are making a difference and addressing issues in the communities they operate, within the workplace and in the environment through responsible business practice.
