Androuet Cheese Shop & Restaurant

Description

Androuet is the name synonymous to Parisian cheese lovers as the number one and leading establishment to buy cheese.

Since 1909 the Parisian cheese making and maturing House of Androuet has preserved the heritage of cheese making. Faithful to tradition, the House of Androuet works hand in hand with the smallest farm producers. The owners, Alex and Leo, arrived in London 4 years ago in their early twenties and began to sell cheese on a stall in Old Spitalfields Market, which progressed into permanent premises. They are passionate about quality food and wine, and love sharing their passion with all.

The cheese shop stores more than 80 cheeses at a time; with the selection changing according to the season. The cheeses are from small producers and mostly from raw milk (pasteurised cheeses are available too).

The cheese shop also offers fine wines to take away, top charcuterie, authentic French bread, crackers, accessories, books and everything associated with cheese.

Adjacent to the cheese shop there is a sweet little cheese restaurant where you can lunch and dine, or just stop for a glass of wine with a beautiful cheese board.

The food menu features homemade food with top quality ingredients created by the chef Alessandro Grano. The fondue is known as being the best in London, and their special blend is changing weekly, but Raclette and Tartiflette are of course also on the menu.

Grain Store

Description

Grain Store is the hotly anticipated new restaurant by Chef Bruno Loubet and The Zetter Group's Michael Benyan and Mark Sainsbury. Following on from the success of The Zetter Townhouse, they have once again, joined forces with pioneering drinks creator Tony Conigliaro. The restaurant is located on Granary Square at the heart of London's most exciting new quarter, King's Cross.

There are no geographical boundaries to the influences that have inspired the eclectic menu they are a culmination of Bruno Loubet's extensive travels and the years dedicated to his beloved vegetable patch. Although many dishes have a meat or fish element, this menu gives vegetables equal billing, if not the starring role.

Tony Conigliaro and Bruno Loubet have also collaborated on elements of their respective menus, matching savoury cocktails with specific dishes, combining kitchen techniques with processes from Tony's laboratory.

The interiors, created by the acclaimed Russell Sage, are designed around the idea of the exploded kitchen. A flexible interior that blurs the lines between kitchen and dining room, with elements of the cooking process spilling over to the table.

Moshi Moshi

Description

Way back in 1994 Caroline Bennett founded Moshi Moshi and started the kaiten-sushi revolution, simply because she loved sushi and was convinced other Londoners would as well. Since then, the restaurant has always stuck to time-honoured Japanese techniques and used the best ingredients we can.

Moshi Moshi serves good, honest Japanese food, and is also an organisation utterly committed to the conservation of our seas. We’re very proud of our fish, and have always worked hard on getting a locally-sourced, best fishing practice catch, of outstanding quality.

  • We first became aware of problems of over fishing in the ocean when we found it difficult to get bluefin tuna in 1997, once we learnt it was as endangered as the rhino, we took it off our menus - we were the first restaurant in the UK to do so.
  • Farmed or wild? We are wary of the damage farme fish may cause on marine life, so we have tried, where possible, to completely remove it from our menu, with the notable exception of our salmon. Loch Duart is a champion of responsible farming, and the quality of their salmon goes unrivalled.
  • We know our fisherman. Thanks to Slow Food we met our wonderful fishing family from Cornwall, who supply us with nearly all our other fin-fish. They fish with static nets which means they do little damage to the marine environment. They don’t throw away any of their fish. They land the fish the day before it arrives with us, and send it directly to us, often arriving still in rigor mortis. The whole family is involved in the business, so it also helps support rural communities in the UK. Without the skill and knowledge of these fisherman, in future we would have no choice but to rely on trawl-caught environmentally damaging fish, so it is important that we take responsibility on our part to support marine-friendly local UK fishers.

Poppies - Camden

Description

At Poppies you will taste our mouth watering, fresh, sustainably caught fish, cooked in crunchy batter, served with golden chips together with experiencing a great buzz and authentic atmosphere going back to the 1940’s and 50’s.

Poppies is more that just a fish bar. Pop has recreated East End London between 1945 and 1955. It was a time of rebirth: the end of the war, the return of our forces from overseas, thriving trade in the food markets and the rebuilding of our city. Hot, quick, tasty, fish and chips were the fuel that powered the people.

Poppies’ owner, Pop Newland, has been serving fish and chips in the East End all his life. Our menu includes mouth watering fresh fish cooked in crunchy batter, served with golden chips and classic mushy peas. Served piping hot, our sustainably caught fish originates from Peterhead Fisheries and is delivered daily by T.Bush, a third generation family business at Billingsgate Market. We only buy fish of the finest quality which is prepared on the premises by our onsite fishmonger.

Our jellied eels are supplied by Mick’s, renowned throughout the East End both for their quality and the sustainable practices that bring them to your plate.

Ruby Violet

Description

We are based on the borders of Tufnell Park and Kentish Town, a little jewel in the heart of Fortess Road, from where we serve our delicious ice cream and sorbet.

We take time to create our flavours, for example the toasted coconut is made by cracking then peeling the coconuts, grating, toasting then soaking in the milk and cream for 2 days, straining then churning.

All the dairy ice cream is made in small batches, using seasonal fruit prepared daily on the premises. In the summer the mint, rhubarb, apples and honey are all sourced from within a few miles. Blackberries and damsons come from Julie's home village of Flintham in Nottinghamshire.

Julie decided right at the beginning to only use organic milk, free range eggs, British or fair trade sugar. We use no artificial preservatives and all our tubs are biodegradable and compostable, and we recycle our spoons.

The ice creams all contain egg yolk. The sorbets contain no dairy. All the sorbets and ice creams may contain traces of nuts, as we use the same equipment and although it is cleaned thoroughly between each batch we cannot guarantee a completely nut free product.

We’re always open to suggestions for new flavours and are very willing to experiment, so please contact us with any ideas.

Ruby Violet also offers catering for special events and weddings and runs ice cream and sorbet-making classes for adults and children.

The Lido Café

Description

The Lido Café is a modern British restaurant open all day. We serve award-winning Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner in one of London’s most unique settings.

Using seasonal ingredients when they are at their best and most abundant we create monthly changing Lunch and and Dinner menus.

From the sourdough bread we use for our Breakfasts, to the oil we triple cook our chips in, we take great time and care, working with small producers to find the best ingredients we can.

Our all European wine list has been thoughtfully selected, and we offer many of these by the carafe and glass.

We have just launched a menu of craft beers (all brewed in London) that are great on their own, but even better when paired with the right food.

The Russet

Description

Tucked away off the relatively undiscovered green expanse of Hackney Downs Park in an ex-industrial printworks lies The Russet. A hidden oasis at the heart of the creative community of Hackney Downs Studios. Elegantly decorated in a rustic, upcycled style.

Big breakfasts, hearty lunches, beautiful cakes, artisan gelato, and modern tapas by night, complimented by interesting wines, local beers and cocktails. Paired with a programme of daytime events focused on families and education and an evening programme of music, cinema, cabaret, theatre, film discussions and workshops in the rear gallery and events space.

The Russet serves local people with good food at reasonable prices. The produce used to design the menus is local, seasonal and fresh. Menus change daily and are inspired by the changes of the seasons and the produce that comes with nature’s shifts. We champion independent providers and ethically sourced ingredients.

The Russet gathered its name from the orchard planted by The Tree Musketeers in Hackney Downs Park. Fifteen heritage apple trees were planted there in 2009 and are now close to fruiting, four of the varieties are russeted. An Egremont Russet, which is seen as the classic Russet was planted around our opening, and will grow and flower as we also do.

Wahaca - Canary Wharf

Description

Looking to the markets of Mexico for inspiration, Wahaca was born from our love of fresh, honest, Mexican market food.

Not so long ago, tequila girls, cheap shots and greasy tortilla chips were images that sprang to mind when ‘Mexican’ was done in Britain. At Wahaca we shook things up a bit and started doing things a little differently. We’ve worked hard to match the flavours of Mexico with ingredients we can get hold of to create a constantly evolving, seasonal menu with ingredients sourced as locally as possibly, or grown and transported with care for the environment.

In recognition of our attempts to run our business with minimal impact on the environment around us, we've been voted Sustainable Restaurant Group of the year for 2 years running by the SRA. Our Wahaca Southbank Experiment restaurant was awarded the Green Building award at the Sustainable City Awards. Our most recent opening in St. Paul's was awarded a Gold SKA rating for measures including our recycling our used cooking oil into Bio Diesel used to power taxis in South London and the recycling of the heat given off by our freezers, to heat our water, saving energy by avoiding the need for a boiler.

Wahaca - Covent Garden

The original and still the best! As popular now as the day it opened, Wahaca Covent Garden collides the heat of the Mexican market with all the coolness of London’s trendy West End, in an explosion of colour, texture and noise. Enjoy the funky music and lively surroundings in our bar while you wait to be seated.
