Root Camp

Root Camp offers residential cookery courses for teenagers that link the field to the plate through hands-on activities in a rural environment.

Kids work outside, planting and picking, weeding and foraging, and in the kitchen, creating seasonal meals and impressive banquets for themselves and guests.

Our message is that cooking and eating together is social and fun, that outdoor work is healthy and rewarding, and that both fit easily into the teenage experience.

At the heart of Root Camp is the notion of independence - that is, the ability to make decisions from a position of knowledge and experience. Our aim is to inspire kids to become more thoughtful consumers and cooks, and to understand the real cost of a £2.99 chicken.

The structure of the day is strong and simple. The kids are divided into two groups. While one group is working in the kitchen, the other is in the field. Then they swap. Each group cooks for the other and all meals are eaten together. The kitchen is led by inspirational chefs. The menu is instructive and ambitious. The outdoor work is hands-on and varied, lead by experienced field supervisors.
