Playing Out

Playing Out is a not-for-profit organisation working to activate street play in communities across the UK. It began in Bristol as a response to the way children’s lives have become restricted and limited by traffic and the dangers and barriers this poses to their freedom.

Playing Out pioneered the use of short road closures during which through traffic is diverted, allowing children to play safely and freely and adult neighbours to meet and get to know each other. While the traffic is temporarily gone children can have the street space to chalk, hopscotch, scoot and make up their own games. As well as getting vital physical activity they have a chance to make friends and build a sense of belonging to their neighbourhood.

These playing out sessions are now happening in streets across Bristol and in towns and cities across the UK where many local authorities have now put policies in place to support residents to use their streets in this way.

Playing Out supports residents keen to make changes on their street and raises awareness of the benefits of street play to children and communities.
