Fair Rubber e.V. (Fair Rubber Association)

The Fair Rubber Association applies the principles of Fair Trade to trade in products made from natural rubber. This contributes to an improvement of the working and living conditions of the primary producers of natural latex (rubber).

The producers of rubber receive a Fair Trade premium of EUR 0.50/kg DRC (Dry Rubber Content). This 'extra' is paid on top of and irrespective of the market price of rubber.

The decision on how to spend the Fair Trade premium rests with those who have done the work: Plantation workers elect a so called 'joint body', for small farmers the decision is taken by the board of their association.

Fair Trade premiums so far have been used for the first ever private (supplementary) pension scheme for rubber workers in India, for safe drinking water, and for the extension of electricity to remote worker houses. These are just some examples.

The Association is set up as a multi-stakeholder association. Commercial companies and social and environmental groups are represented and have to agree on any change in regulations. Current members are based in Canada, Germany, Netherlands and the USA.

So far the Fair Rubber logo can be found on natural latex mattresses, soccer balls, condoms, balloons, household gloves and elastic bands.
