Nailsea Environment & Wildlife Trust (NEWT)

Description

The Nailsea Environment & Wildlife Trust (NEWT) has now acquired six acres of land at Moorend Spout, with major financial support from the Landfill Communities Fund and with additional funds from North Somerset Council and Nailsea Town Council.

The site incorporates a part of the Tickenham and Nailsea Moors Site of Special Scientific Interest, designated on account of the unusual plants and animals to be found in the rhynes. The cluster of Alder and Willow trees has a small spring-fed pond. We have installed a board walk and a new hedge line to the east of the site, and we have recently planted a Black Poplar to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen. We have created four new small ponds to the west of the site, which will be in addition to the five larger ponds planned to occupy up to 500 sq metres to the east. NEWT will invite local people to volunteer in the management of this site, which should give good social and physical activities for all age groups. Its proximity to Tickenham and Nailsea gives opportunities to walkers to easily visit the site.
