Chiltern Seeds

Description

A mail order seed company exporting to over 100 countries and importing rare seeds from all over the world. The catalogue is the largest of its kind, listing around 4,000 items. Aims to introduce into general cultivation unusual, rare and even endangered species, and to introduce gardeners to the fascination of growing from seed. Specialises in non-specialisation - an item is only selected for inclusion in the catalogue if thought to be of interest to the general grower of seeds. As well as the unusual, virtually every plant commonly grown from seed is represented.

Jekka’s Herb Farm

Description

Owned by Chelsea Flower Show gold-medalist, Jekka McVicar, Jekka’s Herb Farm is a leading herb mail order specialist with the largest collection of culinary herbs in the UK. The farm holds Open Days as well as exhibiting at the main RHS Flower shows. Also runs events and courses on herb cultivation and herb garden design.

Jekka’s Herbetum, was created in the grounds of Jekka's Herb Farm in 2013, with the aim to inspire today's visitor and to ensure that the history, culinary and medicinal usage of herbs are not lost for future generations. This ‘living encyclopedia of herbs' is a unique interactive experience for herb and plant lovers of all ages.

Displaying the largest collection of culinary herbs in the UK, the Herbetum is not only a wonderful resource for plant identification but also a gastronomic delight for anyone interested in good food. The Herbetum contains over 300 culinary herbs carefully planted in raised beds, enabling visitors to walk amongst not only British native herbs but also the more unusual tropical varieties.

The herbs in the Herbetum are all propagated and trialled at Jekka’s Herb Farm, and grown for the British Garden. Visitors are able to purchase from the traditional to the rarer variety of herbs that they have just discovered.

The farm now offers groups - gardeners, cooks and herb enthusiasts - the opportunity to book private guided tours of our herbetum, hosted by Jekka McVicar.

Jekka was awarded the Garden Media Guild, Lifetime Achievement Award; ‘for services to horticulture, design, education and communication and excellence in the field of organic herb growing.’ (December 2012)

Meadow In My Garden

Description

Meadow in my Garden is a small family-run firm based in Wiltshire. The company was founded at the kitchen table three years ago by Paul, an organic gardener for many years, who was keen to share his love of a more sustainable style of planting in any type of garden, and now supported by his wife Lesley and an enthusiastic group of friends.

The main focus of our trading remains in encouraging the planting of wildlife friendly flowers in any size of garden, and to this end we can supply seeds in a wide range of quantities from small gift boxes to sacks. Our seed mixes can provide a beautiful low cost and low maintenance flowering solution for problem areas, and are very easy to succeed with.

We are frequent exhibitors at many garden fairs, including the RHS flower shows, and our bee seed mix was shortlisted for new product of the year at Chelsea in our first year of trading.

Project Maya Seedball

Description

Launched in May 2011, Project Maya's Seedball project aims to help increase UK urban wildflower and pollinator abundance.

Seed balls provide a simple and effective technique for growing wildflowers from seed and are based on work by the Japanese natural farming innovator Masanobu Fukuoka. Made with clay, compost and chilli powder, seed balls provide protection from seed predators and nutrients for early growth. As the seeds are encased within their own mini-ecosystem, there's no need to plant the seed balls - just scatter on top of soil or compost and let nature take over.

We give £1 per tin of Urban meadow mix sold to our urban wildflower creating pals River of Flowers. All profits from the Seedball project are used to fund Project Maya and its work towards establishing a network of global sustainability reserves. Project Maya seed balls can be purchased via our online shop, Amazon.co.uk, or from a select number of retailers across the UK. The range includes Bee Mix, Butterfly Mix, Urban Meadow Mix, Oxeye Daisy, Forget-me-not and Poppy.
