House of Wandering Silk

Description

House of Wandering Silk was established in 2010, borne out of the experiences of an Australian aid worker (with a passion for Asian textiles and embroidery), who, during the course of her 7 years work in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, continued to see little sustainable and meaningful change in the lives of those incapacitated by poverty, despite the massive resources committed to the task.

Based out of New Delhi, India, House of Wandering Silk is a social enterprise aimed at adjusting, in its own, small way, some of the inequalities that we see around us while respecting the natural environment in which we work.

Our current product range uses upcycled, vintage saris and handloom textiles in silk and cotton to create one-of-a-kind, high quality scarves and throws in ikat, floral and geometric designs.

The scarves are made using two layers of fabric, handpicked for their fabulous colours and designs and matched in complementary colours. These layers are stitched together in the traditional style of Indian kantha work, in which women hand sew rows of tiny running stitch from end to end to provide strength and enable the recycling of old saris. This kantha stitch creates a rich, rippling effect across the fabric and adds a unique texture to the scarves. The throws are made from a patchwork of the same textiles, and quilted with kantha stitch.

Made

Description

Made accessories incorporate fairtrade elements into their materials, craftsmanship or the entire piece. The original designs are sourced in developing African countries, before being re-worked by influential UK designers - Sam Ubhi, Olivia Morris, Pippa Small, Natalie Dissel, Hayley Mardon or Beatrix Ong. The final co-designed Made accessories have the crucial contemporary element needed to make them desirable for the British market. These final designs are then handmade by the original developing country producers using sustainable, local resources - precious metals, stones and indigenous materials that are familiar to the craftsmen - creating distinctive and original jewellery, bags, belts and shoes.

Ragbag

Description

Ragbags are fashionable bags and accessories made from recycled plastic bags and cotton rags, collected and fabricated by ‘ragpickers’ in the slums of Delhi and Calcutta (India). The production is done by rag pickers, who collect the plastic waste and sell it to the collection centers where they wash and clean it. The bags are sorted on colours and pressed to thicker sheets. Finally they go to small fabricators who make them into new products. The project is already creating jobs for more than 60 ragpickers, people at collection centers and fabricators in New Delhi.

Wild Tussah

Description

We are a socially conscious handbag label driven by a team of people passionate about creating true pieces of art that are just as valuable to you as they are to the effort of keeping culture alive. We also make rare, vintage and hard-to-find sustainable fabrics available to designers and crafters that are 100% made in Vietnam.

We spend our days finding local ethnic weaving villages who are under pressure and need support, working with and empowering these artisans, making their vintage and authentic textiles available to you, using them to create ethical bags, finding talented leather workers, and telling their stories.

These stories have been key motivators to our mission of improving people’s lives by creating demand for their traditions.

Currently, we are working out of Vietnam with local Lu, Cham and Hmong weavers who are struggling to retain their traditional weaving practices. By commissioning these bags and fabrics, specifically for the globally conscious, we are contributing to the continuity of these local handicrafts.

We provide value by preserving ancient weaving techniques, creating jobs for local weavers, rewarding pure artisanship and connecting people to cultures that seem so far removed.

We believe you should only buy products that are sustainable and that you love.
