Eco options for Christmas trees...

As well as the fair trade tree from Fairwind below, here are some eco options for you to keep in mind this year when buying a Christmas tree - with thanks to ITF - the International Tree Foundation:

Source Locally and Sustainably
The British Christmas Tree Growers Association website holds a list of UK tree suppliers. Organically grown trees can be found via the Soil Association and FSC-certified trees from the Forestry Commission.

Choose a Live Tree
Some suppliers provide trees with their roots intact. This allows for the tree to be planted in your garden once the festive season is over. Christmas tree seeds and seedling are also available, allowing you to grow your own.

Dispose of Carefully
Most councils provide a service that shreds trees into chippings for use in local parks and woodland areas. Type your postcode in at Recycle Now to find your nearest facilities.

Hire a Tree
Many UK businesses, such as Trees for Rent in Dorset and Gills Home and Garden in Brighton, are now offering Christmas trees that can be rented over the festive period. The trees are then returned for replanting and can be used again in future years.

Make a Tree
A Christmas tree can be made from recycled materials to produce a low impact piece that will last for many years to come. Interior designer Ingrid Jansen makes recycled trees out of scrap wood. Alternatively, have fun making your own recycled paper tree, using this instructional video.

Go Tree Free
Another option is to not buy a Christmas tree all! The money you save could be donated to a charity such as ITF, where your money would go towards safeguarding forests in UK and Africa.
