The Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT) has demonstrated its commitment to marine conservation by appointing Erin Pettifer as Marine Conservation Officer.

Based at Woods Mill, Henfield, Erin will raise awareness of marine conservation and support The Wildlife Trusts’ Living Seas vision – one where marine wildlife thrives in our seas.

A keen boogie-boarder, many of Erin’s hobbies have a definite marine theme; diving, snorkelling, canoeing, and swimming in the sea. In her previous work for a marine consultancy, Erin conducted surveys, including taking live video footage of the sea floor off the Sussex coast.

She said “I’m delighted to be working for the Sussex Wildlife Trust, helping them achieve their Living Seas vision. Having been lucky enough to see first hand the amazing wildlife we have off our coast I am really keen to share this with others - from charismatic seals and dolphins to fascinating cuttlefish and hermit crabs. Our seas contain more than 50% of the UK’s plants and animals! Yet, we still know less about them than we know about the surface of the moon.

“Now is a really exciting time to be involved in marine conservation as the government has committed to creating a network of Marine Protected Areas around the UK.”
