Sustain: The Alliance for Better Food and Farming

Sustain advocates food and agriculture policies and practices that enhance the health and welfare of people and animals, improve the working and living environment, promote equity, and enrich society and culture. Sustain represents around 100 national public interest organisations working at international, national, regional and local level.

The alliance is a registered charity (no. 1018643) and company limited by guarantee (no. 02673194). It is governed by its membership, which meets annually. The membership elects a Council of 15 trustees who meet quarterly to guide the work of the alliance, subject to approval by the members.

Sustain provides services for its members, (Digest is its subscription newsletter) and also co-ordinates a number of projects including:

  • a new Food Legacy project, using the 2012 Olympics to improve catering standards
  • the Children's Food campaign, to protect children from junk food marketing;
  • London Food Link, helping create a sustainable food system in the capital,
  • the Real Bread Campaign fighting for better bread in Britain,
  • Capital Growth, creating 2012 new food growing spaces in London,
  • Good Food for Our Money, campaigning for better food in hospitals, schools and care homes
  • Sustainable Fish City, aiming to make London the world’s first city buying only sustainable fish.
