Event Description

Sustaining Sustainability - Evening Talk

Social sustainability’s significance to sustain economic and environmental sustainability

Join The Green Register for this new evening talk with speaker Steve Maslin of bud (Building User Design Solutions).

As with wildlife conservation, if we ignore people within our environments, then we will fail to achieve our environmental /ecological objectives. Steve will offer reflections on the opportunities and challenges associated with delivering socially sustainable projects and the significance that this has to sustaining sustainability.

Steve will touch on a range of interrelated themes, such as stakeholder engagement, brief development, "the ecology of service design", information architecture, design for operability and the challenges thrown up by poorly devised procurement paths. He will also reflect on the relevance of an ancient middle eastern pattern of sustainability to challenges we face today and reflect on one of E.F. Schumacher's less known acknowledgements by posing the question "when is small not beautiful?"

About the speaker
With over 20 years’ experience, Steve Maslin is Director of bud (Building User Design Solutions), a Schumacher Institute Research Fellow and member of the RIBA, National Register of Access Consultants, BRE Global Standing Panel of Experts and BSI committees for access, sustainability, FM and symbols. Steve has worked within architectural practice, housing associations, Shelter, social services, local authority and within voluntary re-entry housing and youth projects. He takes particular interest in user experiences, design for the mind, social sustainability, stakeholder engagement and design for operability. He believes that enabling and positive user experiences of built environments informed by stakeholder engagement, leads to greater wellbeing, organisational effectiveness and sustainability.
