Event Description

‘Lots of meaty content - very engaging!’
The Eden Project

A highly practical course helping facilitators to deal with power, conflict & big personalities!

A unique day of interactive and participatory learning to build your confidence as a facilitator or workshop leader.

You will develop your skills and attitudes as a facilitator in working with diverse groups and using participatory processes. We'll look at what it means to be in the mind-set of a facilitator rather than to just ‘do facilitation’. The day will also build your confidence and give you a solid basis on which to develop your own style and techniques.

A day of participatory and experiential learning that will include:

  • What it means to be a facilitator
  • How to support groups to recognise and work with their power dynamics
  • Understand and deal with 'problem' behaviour
  • Cultivate empathy and the appreciation of differences
  • How to frame a group's needs
  • Using questions effectively to draw out the experience of a group

Who should attend this course?
The event will benefit anyone working with groups of people in the role of facilitator/workshop leader, in formal or informal settings. Whether you are a novice wanting to start out with a deep grounding, or an experienced facilitator wishing to develop your current understanding and practice, this course will provide a valuable insight into good facilitation.

Facilitated by Matthew Herbert
Matthew has been facilitating group work for 20 years. In that time he's worked with groups of many kinds - from co-operatives and co-housing projects to campaigning NGOs and community activist networks. Inevitably conflict has arisen and he has supported them to deal with it. He specialises in facilitating groups, small and large, to consensus and he has co-authored several guides on the subject.

Matthew has worked with Amnesty International, Fairtrade Foundation, University of Liverpool, Greenpeace, 38 Degrees, The Scarman Trust, Campaign against the Arms Trade, Centre for Alternative Technology, Co-operatives UK and Friends of the Earth. He is a member of the Rhizome Cooperative- a coop specialising in conflict resolution, consensus building and facilitation of contentious issues.

‘Very interesting event - learnt a lot of great techniques’.
Helena Merriott (Westminster Council)

‘Extremely interesting and informative’
Stephen Miller (Community Development Foundation)

About the Organiser

Talk Action
Provides everything from a speaker on a sustainability issue to the event management for a major green festival or conference. Also runs specialist courses on climate change communication and can supply everything from solar power generators, pedal-powered cinemas and recycled art workshops to inspirational speakers on green and social issues.

Talk Action values social justice and environmental sustainability. We promote equality, opportunity, diversity and a healthy environment for communities in both urban and rural settings.

We think quality of life is more important than quantity of income. So we operate on a non-hierarchical/cooperative system and question all types of economic, environmental and social injustice.
