Low Bank Ground & Hinning House

Low Bank Ground and Hinning House are Wigan Council’s Outdoor Education Centres in the Lake District, managed on behalf of the Council by the Brathay Trust. We provide high quality, enjoyable learning through the outdoors for children and young people. Our work emphasises personal, social and environmental awareness and understanding and is closely related to the “Every Child Matters” agenda.

Our qualified and experienced teaching staff offer schools and colleges exciting outdoor courses using dramatic and inspiring natural environments. We also provide training and activity courses for adults and family groups and special interest holidays. Priority is given to Wigan Council schools but there are usually available dates for other groups.

Low Bank Ground is in the heart of the Lake District on the shores of Coniston water with magnificent views across the lake to the Coniston Fells. It has extensive grounds, a 100 metre lakeshore, boathouse, jetty and wide range of watersports facilities. Behind the Centre is Grizedale forest with facilities for walking, orienteering, mountain biking and sculpture trails. There are two minibuses for group use and a large diesel boat for lake journeys.

Yew Tree Lodge at Low Bank Ground is a superb base for all kinds of day visits- outdoor activities, field studies, ICT, meetings and seminars. This facility is available for all groups from the local community to further afield.

Hinning House is a purpose-built Centre in a superb location, in the beautiful Duddon Valley, close to Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain. Close by are sites for rock scrambling, climbing, hill walking, orienteering, mountain biking and farm visits. There are also spectacular valley walks along the River Duddon.

The Centres are available to independent groups on a catered or self- catering basis.
